In a similar vein: "Yeats consistently combined an immense need for revelation, for belief, with an intense and critical skepticism; this makes it difficult to determine exactly what he believed and when" (Marjorie Howes, Introduction, The Cambridge Companion to Yeats, p3).

An Alkan piano challenge has been leveled 'gainst you. Not that you have time or energy to spare, but Alkan's Festin d'Esope awaits. see my blog for details. It's quite a piece of work.

My plan this summer is also to begin studying for my prelims, though ostensibly I am not taking my exams until March. I admire your organization! How did you compile the reading list for your exams? Did they assign you texts or did you choose them yourself?

Dear Laura,

I gave Emo a Wii Fit for Christmas, and we hooked it up in early January. I used it with her for about a week, set up an avatar and was told I was underweight. I set high scores for all the games, and then I quit. I always did enjoy running more than indoor exercises. Anyway, the Wii Fit has a little icon that tells you, "It has been 2 days since your last visit." After about two months, the icon started making snarky comments to Emily - "Where's Jon?" "It's been a long time since I've seen Jon." etc. I signed on one day, and it said, "It has been 62 days since your last visit." It then told me I was still underweight. I haven't used it since.

Sincerely,
Jon

I like the part about the first demand of a poem is that it be interesting--in line with Vonnegut's first rule of writing posted on Sycamore. I always felt like that was the hardest part of teaching creative writing, explaining to a student that he or she just isn't interesting.

The Goethe quote is a winner. Great for a creative writing class, I agree.
